Announcement: FreeSWITCH Now Supports Broadvoice BV16, BV32 Voice Codecs
The FreeSWITCH team is pleased to announce that support has been added for the recently open-sourced Broadvoice audio codecs. The two Broadvoice codecs are the BV16 for narrowband 8kHz audio and the BV32 for wideband 16kHz audio. By releasing these codecs without any licensing fees or royalties, and under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL), version 2.1, Broadvoice has made them available to many telephony software projects.
The BV16 and BV32 codecs have qualities that lend their use to VoIP applications:
- Low Latency - only 5ms
- Low CPU Usage - typically 1/2 to 1/3 less than comparable ITU codecs
- High Quality - comparable MOS scores to other codecs
- Moderate Bit-Rate - very high coding efficiency
The Broadvoice codecs are the third codec family supporting HD voice to be added to FreeSWITCH over the past year. They join a number of other zero-cost, high quality codecs, including CELT and G.722.
