Welcome To FreeSWITCH
The World's First Cross-Platform Scalable FREE Multi-Protocol Soft Switch
FreeSWITCH is a scalable open source cross-platform telephony platform designed to route and interconnect popular communication protocols using audio, video, text or any other form of media. It was created in 2006 to fill the void left by proprietary commercial solutions. FreeSWITCH also provides a stable telephony platform on which many telephony applications can be developed using a wide range of free tools. More
New Module For FreeSWITCH: mod_osp (Open Settlement Protocol)
The good folks over at TransNexus have written a new module for FreeSWITCH that implements the Open Settlement Protocol: mod_osp. Jim Dalton from TransNexus describes it this way:
"mod_osp is a module that generates route queries and CDRs in the ETSI Open Settlement Protocol (OSP) format. OSP is basically a standard set of XML messages for requesting routing and access for inter-domain communications."
Complete information about the OSP protocol can be found at the TransNexus OSP Toolkit page. You may be wondering, "Why OSP? And why FreeSWITCH?" I asked Jim Dalton about the choice to create an OSP implementation in FreeSWITCH. He notes:
"We chose to contribute to FreeSWITCH because we expect our customers will want to use FreeSWITCH. Our customers use TransNexus software primarily for Class 4 routing. The primary VoIP platforms used by our customers are 1) OpenSIPS, 2) session border controllers such as Acme, Cisco and Nextone (GenBand), and 3) softswitches such as Metaswitch, Broadsoft and Sonus. We think FreeSWITCH is a logical blend of the benefits offered by OpenSIPS and commercial session border controllers. Some customers want an open source platform such as OpenSIPs, but must have the ability to mask IP addresses. For these customers, FreeSWITCH is a logical alternative to commercial session border controllers."
Also of interest to FreeSWITCH users (and OSS telephony enthusiast in general) is OSPrey. Jim goes on to relate:
"Also, the 32-bit version of the TransNexus routing server, OSPrey is free, and we think it may have some appeal to FreeSWITCH. One of the nice features of the soon to be released free OSPrey server is the ability to locally host the US number portability database and pull automatic updates from the Number Portability Administration Center. This software is in commercial use now and the free version will be available this summer."
